Simon graduated from Birmingham University and subsequently gained both an MBA and qualified ACIB. Simon has extensive experience as a commercial banker with Nat West, Chartered Trust (part of Standard Chartered) and Hill Samuel and as a trainer through BPP and his own training company GW Training. During his fifteen year banking career Simon has been involved in credit risk analysis and management; credit policy formulation; business development; relationship management and corporate recovery and restructuring.
He has a long banking experience, starting as a graduate trainee at Nat West and working as a manager in one of the bank’s first ever corporate banking centres. Simon then moved to Chartered Trust where he was a senior credit analyst/credit manager. Beginning in a small specialist corporate banking and corporate finance team, which at the time was involved in property investment and development, Simon became involved in the more specialist areas of stocking and leasing finance and also became a member of the Bank’s regional credit committee. He then moved to Hill Samuel as a Corporate Banking Manager with specific responsibility for business development in the South Wales Region.
Simon was involved in formulating and establishing the bank’s strategy and policy for the Region as well as business development and relationship management. Following on from this role, Simon moved into the corporate recovery group where he successfully managed the recovery of a loan portfolio in excess of £400m.
He has over seventeen year’s experience as a full time trainer covering a broad range of Corporate Banking areas including: credit analysis (both corporate and banks), cash flow analysis, financial modelling, documentation and legal issues, problem loan management, corporate funding, corporate strategy, fundamentals of corporate finance, and understanding accounts and accounting issues.
During this time Simon has been involved in major inhouse training programmes at a wide range of international banks, insurance companies and supranational agencies. He has also run open course programmes and specific individual courses delivered on a global basis. In addition to delivering professional training programmes, Simon has also been involved with several academic institutions and is currently an external assessor on the Cardiff University MBA Programme.
